I was born in 1977 into what would become a large Catholic family, and grew up as a corporate brat, moving from place to place but never settling down until I ended up in downtown Chicago after grad school. I’d always been fascinated by flying but given my bad eyesight, I’d never sought a license; I’d always loved great photography but I never spent the time and energy to really take it seriously myself.
Still, both bugs were there. I found I really enjoyed posting my favorite shots on Facebook, finding ones that evoked feelings and responses from friends and family, figuring out what worked and what didn’t. And I caught myself looking at other people’s drones with more than a little curiosity. (And perhaps a touch of jealousy.)
When I finally bought a drone of my own, both passions found an outlet. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed taking pictures from it. Inspired by Martin Scorsese’s high-angle camera work, and eager to do something different than the norm, I started gimballing my camera down and found I particularly loved taking my own top-down God’s-eye shots, finding the art all around us that’s hidden from view by our earthbound perspectives. I loved the work so much that I studied for and earned my FAA Part 107 license so I could sell pictures commercially.
I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed taking them!
